Arts and Entertainment:Music from EzineArticles.com

Music is widely known all over the world. For some, this is their form of positive reinforcement while others make this as their way of earning money. The good news is music has also been developing throughout the years. From the regular analog music, they now come in compressed forms like digital music.

Wrapped Up With Here Come The Mummies

I have picked out, in my opinion, the 5 Best Techno Songs of the Twenty-First Century. I enjoy a wide variety of electronic music, so some of these picks might be better classified as Rave, Electronic Dance, Trance, Eurodance, Electronica or maybe even House. Genres are getting a little too specific anyway, and there are way too many different classifications. So, if the song was at least partly synthetic, and had a good enough beat to dance to, then it made my list.

The Most Poignant Elvis Costello Lyrics Of All

With so many Effects Pedals out there, how is a musician to know what order they should be in when chaining them together? Eric Johnson and Jimi Hendrix used their wah-wah first in line. Carlos Santana puts a Tube Screamer before his wah-wah. Many artists bend the "rules" to get different sounds. There is no set "Rules" for chaining your effects pedals, but there are some known standard pedal set-up.

The Top 25 Dirty South Songs of the Decade And Why

When searching for the equipment to put together a hip hop recording studio, there is almost an uncountable number of choices. The number one thing for an emcee (or any vocal musician for that matter) to pay attention to when purchasing equipment is the sound quality of that component. To make the best choices, the musician must know about the equipment before going in to buy anything.

Start Recording Your Own Album Buy Rap Beats On The Internet

Depending on your age and musical tastes, you might've been exposed to Henry Rollins as he ground it out in punk rock titans Black Flag. Or like me, you might've been an impressionable teen, watching that "Liar" video get heavy play on MTV's Alternative Nation. I'm sure there are folks out there who only know Rollins from his books and spoken word performances, or his numerous television and film appearances. The tattooed dude with the muscles, right? Regardless, you know that guy. Almost as fascinating as the cult of personality that has grown around Henry Rollins over the years is the way he's deftly navigated a creative life, always working with a desperation that one day it could all go away-IT being the audiences, the paying public, the speaking gigs and acting opportunities. That fear is common in Hollywood, but in Rollins' case I think it has only served as motivation: to leave it on the stage every single night (whether he's speaking or screaming) and make every sentence count. One reason why I can claim I've never, ever been disappointed in Henry Rollins.

Wedding Music Guide: How To Hire Music Entertainment

I have picked out, in my opinion, the 5 Best Techno Songs from 1990 to1995. I enjoy a wide variety of electronic music, so some of these picks might be better classified as Rave, Electronic Dance, Trance, Eurodance, Electronica or maybe even House. Genres are getting a little too specific anyway, and there are way too many different classifications. So, if the song was at least partly synthetic, and had a good enough beat to dance to it, then it made my list. Techno songs usually have several different mixes of the same song, so if there is a specific version that I like it will be noted after the song title.

President Obama Visits NYC To Honor The World Trade Center Memorial

Last night David and I met up with our good friends Tamar, Ollie and Rob for a fun bowling date at Lucky Strike in Hollywood, CA. Tam and I have been trying to work out a time where we could all hang out for sometime now but our schedules have been getting in the way. We finally managed to get the time set and last night was our bowling date night. To be honest, we collectively did NOT exhibit the best bowling skillz last night … but we did have a blast and that is really all that matters.

David and I supped on delicious pizza at Prizzi’s Piazza before bowling and for those of you who are fans of their amazing food, I have the sad duty to report that the restaurant is closing at the end of this month. I was very shocked and very bummed to see the notice of closure on the door as we walked in. If you love Prizzi’s pizza, you’re running out of time to enjoy it :(

In happier news, tho, our bowling date was nothing but a total blast. Lucky Strike was pretty empty so we had a lot of room to play. David ended up winning but we all did our best … and that’s all that matters ;D

Today is Cinco de Mayo and while I normally would be out whooping it up with margaritas tonight, I’ll instead be jammin’ my buns off at the first of another set of 3 Prince concerts at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. I am really excited for tonight’s show … I’m hearing rumors that Stevie Wonder *may* make a surprise appearance at one of the shows this weekend. My guess is that if Stevie does appear, it’ll prolly be during Saturday’s concert. I cannot wait to see what’s gonna happen tonight :D Happy Thursday!

White iPhone 4 Selling Well

The long-awaited white version of the hugely popular iPhone 4 was released yesterday in 27 countries.

Apparently it's selling wellpretty well… amazingly well:

Initial reports from Asia indicated it had sold out in Hong Kong and Beijing within hours of going on sale yesterday.

Wow!

We're not very surprised by this, Apple products always sell like hot cakes! (if hot cakes sell millions of units and make phone calls… kind of a ridiculous phrase)

Cue every news outlet reporting on it to say that it's "white hot," right??

Congrats, Steve!

How Guitar Beginners Can Enjoy A Pleasant Sound As They Learn

In any genre of music, there are specific individuals that are considered the pioneers or those who transcend a musical generation. Southern Gospel music is no different. With its origins deeply rooted in the early 1900's based on Christian lyrics and backed by American early music styles such as bluegrass it has its own history of transcendent artists.

Cheap Electric Guitars How Can I Effectively Care For Them?

Guitar effects pedals come in a wide variety but the fact is that most guitar effects are just variations on four basic themes: Distortion, Dynamics, Reverb/Delay, and Pitch Modulation. They also come in a variety of configurations which were initially, single effects built into pedals, called stomp boxes, which grew into multi-effects processors built into both floor pedals, rackmount, and tabletop units. Many also include drum machines and headphone jacks for practice purposes.

Last night David and I made our way to the Neil Simon Theater on Broadway to see the new musical Catch Me If You Can. Altho I had not seen the film, I was very anxious to see this show because one of my favorite Broadway actresses, Kerry Butler, stars in the show. I was only marginally familiar with the story so I hoped that seeing it cold would be entertaining. For the most part, I thought the show was OK … but, unfortch, it wasn’t nearly as exciting or upbeat as I was hoping.

The staging, set design, costumes and overall look of the show are really it’s strongest assets. You can tell that a lot of thought about the time period went into the staging and production of the show. The overriding problem for me was the story … the long, drawn out … not very exciting story. You’d think that a show with an exciting title like Catch Me If You Can would be upbeat, sexy and feature lots of action and showy dance numbers. Sadly, that is not the case. Most of the story in Act I was just rattled off in dialogue … there weren’t too many catchy numbers to sing along to. Of the songs in the show, I couldn’t even remember any of them after the show was over … well, except for one song. Kerry Butler belts out a showstopping number (Fly, Fly Away) at the very end of the show that is THE best song of the show. I was very surprised, tho, that Kerry isn’t featured AT ALL in the entire first Act … and she is billed as the female lead. Thankfully, Act II picked up considerably and manages to save the show from being a total snooze but as a whole … the show only ends up “OK”. That being said, I’m very glad I got to see the show and did enjoy myself, for the most part. I will say that Catch Me If You Can isn’t a show that I would ever feel the need to see again and it’s not a show that I would call a Must See. Lead actor Aaron Tveit is fine in his role as Frank Abagnale, Jr. but for me the real star of the show is Norbert Leo Butz who plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty. He was the best actor/character in the show. David and I had fun but we’ve seen better shows. If you’re a fan of the Catch Me If You Can story, this show might be for you … otherwise, you may be a bit disappointed by the show’s lack of real excitement.

Survivor: Redemption Island, Episode 9 Recap

Episode 9 of Survivor: Redemption Island begins on Night 21 at the unholy island where Matt has been exiled to once again. Boston Rob Mariano played the perfect Godfather role and blindsided Matt, who knows he was naive to trust Rob. Is God using Matt’s stupidity for some higher purpose? That is the question on Matt’s mind. If you can call it a mind! Day 22 at Camp Murlonio, Spanish for ‘stupid sucker-fish’ according to Rob. David thinks Rob played a genius move last night and compliments him. The rest of the Zappers (former Zapatera Tribe members) think Rob is cold-blooded and ruthless. One for certain is that Rob is having more fun this season than last time. During the previous Survivor All-Star round, Rob had been down, missing his wife Amber, who was pregnant. Can a Mastering Studio Make a Bad Recording Sound Great?

Produced by Mitchell Froom, who also worked with Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega and Randy Newman, the Crowded House Woodface album is to many of the bands followers their zenith as a recording unit. Released in July 1991, many of the songs included on it were originally intended for a Finn Brothers solo venture, until Neil asked Tim if he could use their co writes on the upcoming Crowded House project. Tim responded, allegedly with tongue in cheek, that he would agree only if he could join the band.

Frank Sinatra and The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award

When collecting Punk memorabilia we should remember that Punk as a movement is something that is hard to define. It was a way of life for fans, from attitude to clothing and general outlook on life and its anti-establishment message. For the general public the best representation of all that was bad about the Punk movement was personified in the band 'The Sex Pistols', which had been the brainchild of manager Malcolm McLaren. They were part of the 'Punk package' that were spreading their anti-establishment message throughout the country.

Do You Have Enough Discipline To Be A Musician?

When I first started playing the guitar I had been completely against using an acoustic guitar tuner. This was on the basis that I could use my ears to learn pitch. It could also have been because I had no money, but that is another story. However, what I discovered was that I was far more interested in playing and attempting to write songs rather than the actual mechanics of theory. Many of you will see where I am coming from with this and have either purchased or are in the process of purchasing a guitar tuner as opposed to trying to learn by ear.

How to Get Paid Gigs

It's difficult to describe just how influential the early rockabilly pioneers were on the musicians that came after them. These musicians were breaking brand new ground in the 1950's and making up the rules of rock and roll as they were going along. And although they've been all but forgotten by the majority of modern music fans--and even modern rock musicians--their influence simply cannot be denied.

Jennifer Lopez Hits Road With Hubby For New Show

Called ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen, Lopez’s new show will follow her and Marc Anthony around the Western Hemisphere as they search for international talent. Sounds big, doesn’t it? It’s one thing to show up at an arena and sift through hundreds of singers. It’s quite another to travel to over twenty different countries to find, as they put it, the “world’s most extraordinary talent.” That’s exactly what the celebrity couple plans to do, and it will all be broadcast in three different languages all across the Americas. This isn’t just an audition based show, either. Backed by Simon Fuller, they actually plan to literally show up in cities and towns and have the residents bring them to the most talented people around. Lopez says that will include trips to “clubs, bars, dance studios, underground dance halls and festivals” in the various locations they travel to. Once they are all rounded up, the best of the best will be brought back to California and polished up for a huge show. I’m not sure I’ve even heard of a television project with a loftier sounding premise. It is certainly a risk, but I think they can pull it off. They will have the [...]

An Acoustic Drum Kit Versus an Electronic Drum Kit

Nowadays, people really enjoy listening to music, whether it is with traditional CD's, iPods, or even on the internet. There are many websites that offer online music selections. Most of the high quality tracks come from websites that let you pay for the service. There are also some websites that let you download songs for free, but these are usually from the independent artists. You could also listen to music online using internet radio. However, the disadvantage with this type of music is that you would only get to listen to the tracks. You won't be able to save them.

History of Teen Choice Awards

Soul Train began in 1971, as the first African American music variety show in the history of American television, with a format including a dance club ambiance playing the day's most popular urban music, complete with dancing men and women throughout the show, dressed to impress, along with hosts and performances from among major figures in Black entertainment. Though it initially aired in only the seven cities of Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, the show met with a successful start. Within seven months, the show had achieved its goal of airing in syndication in 25...

Want to Learn the Flute? Here Are Things to Consider

In my opinion, and I stress it is only an opinion, with If You Want Blood You Got It and Live at Donington, AC/DC have contributed two of greatest live albums ever released. I rarely listen to their studio work anymore as I find myself gravitating toward their live output, attracted as I am by the sheer rawness of the music and the energy that is blatantly apparent from the salivating hordes in the crowd.

Jennifer Lopez Video Footage WILL Be Released

Well folks, it looks like we will be seeing that footage of Jennifer Lopez from her marriage to Ojani Noa after all! Noa found a loophole and is able to distribute the video. I am telling you, this shiz better be good, cause I am tired of hearing about it. If Jenny from the block is making much a do about nothing, I’m gonna be pissed! We heard about this footage a while back. It supposedly features J-Lo’s rise to fame, and her marriage to Ojani. Due to a confidentiality agreement he signed, he was unable to distribute it. But he found a loop hole – selling it! He sold it to his current girlfriend, and a judge ruled she is able to distribute it. There are no sex scenes so don’t get your hopes up that way, but there is apparently some saucy footage of her flashing her girly bits and other “deviant behavior.” “This is among other nudity on her part in the now 21 hours of home movies that we have so far recovered.” Jennifer has fought hard to keep this footage from going public, but it seems her lawyers didn’t cover all of the bases. Now [...]

Welp … that’s it. The very final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show has aired in parts of the country, including the show’s home city of Chicago, IL. As expected, there were no guests on today’s final episode … it was just Oprah and her audience. Oprah shared her love, thanks and tentative goodbyes to her audience in the studio and watching around the world. Click below to watch video excerpts from Oprah‘s final show … including her final “until we meet again” that closed out the show.

It’s hard to believe that after 25 years, The Oprah Winfrey Show is really over … but it is over … finite … dunzo. Thanks for everything, Oprah. You are much loved and your daily talk show will be missed by many, I’m sure.

Modern Classical Music

Over a meal, I had a friend wax philosophic about this new band "Cut Copy". He said it was this great French band that sounded a lot like Joy Division. Once I got home, I noodled around on Google and saw a video of them performing on the Jimmy Fallon show. These guys were performing some amazing music, but there was this guy wearing a gorilla outfit. I'm not sure what that was about, but he was going nuts on the tom toms. I think it distracted a bit from the song, but it definitely got my attention, so I decided to do some more digging.

The Longstanding Appeal of Superheroes

Reading scripts can be a great way for aspiring writers to get a good sense of story and character. Providing analyses of other writer's scripts can help and reader know what studios and production companies are looking for in scripts, which can only serve to strengthen their own projects. To earn extra money on the side of assistant duties, I frequently dove into script reading for various production companies and agencies.

The Guitar Kits Edge When It Comes to Making a Custom Guitar

For someone like me, who pays close attention to lyrics, at times even before the music, Ryan Driver's album Who's Breathing? is pure perfection. It's a blissful frolic through fields of contradiction and beauty, where one can bask in the loveliness of the English language. Too flowery? Maybe. But for a word nerd like me, Who's Breathing? is amazing.

It had nothing to do with the quality of the project!

Although a few networks have turned down The Kennedys miniseries with an all-star cast, Showtime Networks president of entertainment David Nevins claims that it had nothing to do with how good the movie was.

He said:

“It wasn’t Showtime. I looked seriously at it, and thought it was well acted, well made and very watchable. What it really came down to was that it didn’t feel Showtime. It didn’t feel like premium cable. I have great respect and love for [Kennedys creator] Joel Surnow. He’s got a great cast. It didn’t fundamentally feel us. My vow coming in was to focus on renewable resources, and series are renewable resources.

I was hired to be the steward of this brand and bring the brand to the next phase of its existence. I felt it was not Showtime.”

Wow. We heard it the first time! Guess it wasn't A LOT of networks!

Cultivating Creativity Part II

When learning how to draw a face you need to understand the structure, proportions and the various parts that make up that face. Before I offer you some kind of guideline for the structure, proportions and the various parts of the face, I need to make it clear, that whilst it is really important to get a good understanding of the components that make up the face, it is not an exact science by any means. If you have ever researched the topic you'll know what I mean, you'll find there is a lot of conflicting information and many offering some kind of proof to back up their own particular theory. I am sure no one is deliberately trying to mislead us of course; I believe it is because humans are very diverse beings and there are just so many variables to take into account.

As I mentioned earlier, David and I were lucky enough to see an early screening of the year’s FIRST Summer blockbuster film Thor here in LA last night and I am happy to report that I really loved the film. Forget for a minute that Thor is a really exciting action movie, what I loved most about the film was the story and the direction. Yes, folks, this is a superhero film worth seeing for cinematic reasons rather than merely FX and explosions.

With Kenneth Branaugh in the director’s seat, you have to know that Thor is not going to be your run-of-the-mill superhero flick. Yes, Thor tells the tale of the God of Thunder depicted in the long-running Marvel comic book series … but it also tells the centuries old myths from Norse lore. Much of the scenery that is used for the worlds of Asgard and Jötunheim is all CGI … but it is among the most flawlessly beautiful CGI I’ve ever seen. We saw Thor in IMAX 3D and I couldn’t get over how amazingly beautiful the special effects looked. Branaugh really outdid himself with this film. His mastery of bringing Shakespeare‘s stories to the big screen is legendary … who knew he had it in him to have the same skill for big budget action films as well? As for the story, we learn the Thor “creation myth” (ie. how the superhero Thor came to be) but we also get a very loose retelling of the Norse myth as well. Not only is the story adventurous but it’s also very funny. The entire cast is just fantastic … Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin is EVERYTHING. He plays the Allfather to a tee. Kat Dennings provides the PERFECT comedic relief … but lead actor Chris Hemsworth also provides a few LULz of his own. And people, let me tell you … Hemsworth makes a beautiful god. There’s a shirtless scene that literally made the audience gasp. I really loved every single second of this film. I was a bit worried how they were going to make the god Thor seem believable on Earth … but they managed to not only make him believable but kinda relatable as well. Do you remember how flawlessly executed the first Iron Man film was? Thor is just as good or BETTER than that. If you can, I recommend seeing the film in IMAX (IMAX 3D if you can) because the size and scope really makes a difference. Thor sets a high standard for the rest of the superhero and blockbuster films to come this year. It’s really fantastic.

MAKE SURE you stay in the theater until after the credits finish rolling … there is an extra scene at the very, very end that you cannot miss.

I cannot recommend Thor enough … it’s an excellent blockbuster film … I really think all y’all will truly enjoy it.

Tattoo Given In School

… And the art teacher watched as the fellow student inked the 16-year-old and two other kids.

Really?!

That's pretty atrocious, to have someone who is in an authority position completely ignore the dangers that this poses. And it DID have dangers, it turns out:

Lovella Deloatch let her daughter Timisha get her grandmother's initials professionally tattooed on her arm and the words "beautiful nightmare" on her lower back.

That was before they learned Timisha is a type 1 diabetic.

"It could get infected easily, she could get gangrene easily. It wouldn't heal, it could still be bleeding and I wouldn't know because it was on the inside, she could lose a limb, anything. She might have made a bad judgement call for herself, but she's 16, the adult was supposed to have stepped in and said no."

We just don't know how this makes sense to someone who was hired to teach these kids. It's such a stupid idea. Seriously. Even the most reckless person could see it!

An investigation is under way, of course, and we'd definitely like to see something done about this!

Terrible!

For a man who has gone through depression and drug addiction, divorce twice, serious personal injury (after a 1969 motorcycle accident in Martha's Vineyard) and family bereavement (with the loss of his brother Alex in 1993), it is astonishing that James Taylor's life in music has been largely an expression of sensitivity, hope and compassion - not of self-pity, anger or blind hostility. For these reasons alone, I appreciate James Taylor music so much.

Taylor was to become one of the biggest stars to emerge from the late 60s / early 70s folk-rock phenomenon, a more soulful practitioner than such earthier, troubadour predecessors as Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan.

Confused by Guitar Effects: Clean/Boost, Compressor, Distortion, Overdrive, Fuzz?

Throughout his career, Elvis Costello has to his credit explored many different genres of music, from the spiky guitar pop of his early albums, to the country and western projects of the early 80s and mid 90s, to his experiments with The Brodsky Quartet and writing collaborations with the likes of Allen Toussaint and Paul McCartney. However, it is on the song Shipbuilding that Costello seems to find a lyric that combines a righteous anger with a level of compassion and sensitivity perhaps not normally associated with his songwriting.
