Appropriately thin fabrics including canvas, muslin, hessian and calico can be glued to a board; usually masonite, in order to achieve a heavily textured surface. This method is known as marouflaging; an extremely economical means of using excess fabric and board off-cuts while providing the ideal solution for painting on site or "en plein air" Firstly, thoroughly rub the surface with a somewhat dampened cloth to remove any excess dust, then place it facing down on a generously sized piece of fabric. Cut it to size leaving enough an approximate 2 inch overhang around the perimeter.
